Spanish composer; as Victoria was convinced that music had the duty to praise god, he only wrote music pieces for religious occasions. He came from Ávila, where also Saint Teresa was born; her mystical experiences have impressed his childhood obviously deeply; his brother Augustus was friends with her. Victorias musical education started as a chorister at the cathedral in Ávila. With 17 years he went to Rome, where he wanted to become a priest but he soon turned towards music. He worked as a maestro di cappella at a Spanish church in Rome and was then appointed as the successor of Palestrina and musical head of the Roman Seminary. In 1595 he returned to Spain where he became chaplain of empress Maria. Before his death in 1603 he composed a requiem which is being considered as his most beautiful piece of music which was at the same time his last.
