Gioseffo Zarlino (* 22nd March 1517 in Chioggia; † 14. February 1590 in Venice) was an Italian conductor, music theorist and composer. Zarlino studied under Adrian Willaert in Venice. 1565 he succeeded Cypriano de Rore as a conductor at the basilica San Marco in Venice and held this position until his death. His compositions which were bequeathed are clear and include, apart from other works, some motets and madrigals. His work as a music theorist is more important regarding to music history. Many call him the "father of the modern music theory“. His most well known student was the music theorist and composer Vincenzo Galilei, father of Galileo Galilei. A further well known student was Giovanni Croce. |
